Pedam’s Oak is an abandoned farm in Weardale.  It has an oak tree next to it. This was known as the hanging tree. In the 17th Century the farmer went to war and left his wife to look after the farm. She struggled with it so she recruited a farm hand from the village to help. They had an affair and she became pregnant. Out of shame she hung herself on the Oak tree next to the house.
